Beyond the Bible: A Catholic Response to Sola Scriptura

The core belief that unites all Protestants is the conviction that the Bible alone—Latin, “sola scriptura”—is the infallible rule for Christian faith and practice. But is this what Jesus and the apostles intended for the Church, especially beyond the apostolic age? Given the historical evidence, is the sola scriptura model a more plausible foundation for the Christian faith than the Catholic understanding, which includes both Scripture and Tradition? In this three-lesson short course, I explore the idea that neither Jesus nor the apostles envisioned sola scriptura as the governing principle for Christian faith. I also argue that historical Christian testimony supports this view. Furthermore, I critically examine the sola scriptura paradigm itself, highlighting its internal contradictions and the theological challenges it presents.

How to Talk About Morality in an Age of Moral Relativism

In this three-lesson course, you will learn what moral relativism is as it relates to other forms of relativism, and how to identify the incoherencies of moral relativism, thereby providing reasons why absolute moral truth exists. You will also learn how to expose the moral relativism that permeates the moral shame culture, along with the strategies needed to charitably defend objective morality without meriting the shaming labels of intolerance, judgmentalism, bigotry, and hatefulness.
